Candle Care: Five Tips for the Perfect Burn
Burn It Right. Enjoy It Longer.
A few simple habits will help your AyurLight candle burn cleaner, last longer, and deliver the best fragrance experience possible.

The First Burn Matters Most
When lighting your candle for the very first time, allow it to burn for at least 3 hours or until the melted wax reaches as close to the edges of the container as possible.
Why is this important? Candles develop a "wax memory." If the first burn is too short, the candle may begin to tunnel, creating a deep hole in the center while leaving unused wax around the edges. Once tunneling starts, it can be difficult to correct.
This is especially important with our handcrafted copper vessels. Unlike glass, copper naturally pulls heat away from the wax and distributes it throughout the vessel. While this helps create a beautiful, even burn over time, it also means the candle needs a longer initial burn to establish a full melt pool. If extinguished too soon, the wax may not fully melt to the edges, increasing the likelihood of tunneling.
Taking the time to achieve a complete melt pool on the first burn sets the foundation for cleaner, more even burns throughout the life of your candle.
Trim the Wick Before Every Burn
Before each use, gently remove the black "mushroom" that forms at the tip of the wick.
Only a small trim is needed. Avoid cutting the wick too short, as a healthy flame is necessary for proper wax melt and fragrance throw.
Regular wick trimming helps:
- Create a cleaner flame
- Reduce soot and smoke
- Prevent excessive flickering
- Improve candle performance
- Extend burn time
A properly maintained wick produces a steady flame and a more enjoyable candle experience.
Keep the Flame Centered
A centered wick allows the candle to melt evenly across the surface.
If the wick shifts to one side while the wax is still soft, gently reposition it before the wax hardens. An off-center wick can cause uneven burning, tunneling, and unnecessary heat buildup on one side of the vessel.
This is particularly important with copper containers, which conduct heat more efficiently than glass.
Avoid Burning Longer Than 4 Hours
For the best performance, do not burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time.
Extended burn sessions can cause:
- Excessively large flames
- Faster wax consumption
- Overheating of the vessel
- Reduced fragrance performance
Allow the candle to cool completely before relighting.
Keep Candles Away from Drafts
Air movement affects how a candle burns.
Avoid placing candles near:
- Open windows
- Ceiling fans
- Air vents
- Air conditioners
- Frequently opened doors
Drafts can cause uneven burning, flickering, smoking, and wasted wax. A calm environment creates the cleanest burn and best fragrance experience.
Know When It's Time to Stop
Discontinue use when approximately ¼ inch of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel.
Burning beyond this point may cause the container to overheat and can create unnecessary safety risks.
Although it can be tempting to enjoy one final burn, this is when containers become hottest and most vulnerable to damage.
Copper Vessel Care
Our handcrafted copper vessels require a little extra attention.
Handle With Care
Copper naturally becomes warm during use, just like any glass jar, and may remain hot for some time after the flame has been extinguished. Always allow the vessel to cool before handling.
Natural Copper Oxidation
You may occasionally notice green markings on the inside of the vessel. This is a natural oxidation process that occurs with copper and is completely normal. It does not affect the quality, safety, or performance of your candle.
Wooden Wick Care
Wooden wick candles should also be discontinued when approximately ¼ inch of wax remains.
Because wooden wicks create a broader flame and unique crackling ambiance, they generate more heat near the end of the candle's life and should not be burned to the bottom of the vessel.
Candle Safety
- Always place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface
- Never leave a burning candle unattended
- Extinguish candles before leaving a room
- Keep away from children, pets, curtains, and flammable materials
- Never touch a hot vessel immediately after burning
- Allow candles to cool completely before moving them
